SaFED initiative hopes to turn white vans green
A new government initiative hopes to encourage white van men to curb their fuel consumption.
The scheme, dubbed Safe and Fuel Efficient Drivers (SaFED), will fund 200 driving instructors to help 3,500 van drivers save vehicle and energy costs using improved driving techniques.
It is thought that a day of training for drivers, when put into practice over 20,000 miles, could make savings of up to £500 in diesel costs, reduce the cost of insurance premiums, allow for 59 per cent fewer gear changes and ease carbon emissions as well.
Alistair Darling, transport secretary, said: "The white van fleet keeps the British economy moving - playing a vital role in its success. Van drivers can play their part in making Britain a greener place. At the same time making a tidy saving.
"The scheme makes business sense. As our pilot shows greener, cheaper, safer driving is possible while still getting the product there on time."
The one-day course takes place both on the road and in the classroom.
